Arts & Science | Itajime Ai Sleeveless Gather Dress

by Arts & Science

Details

If you are looking for a dreamy and airy summer dress, look no further.  This dress is dyed in Indigo with a unique technique called Itajime which is used in Arts and Science's summer collection.  The dress features a button up henley neck and band collar.

"Itajime dyeing, a traditional technique dating back to the Nara period, involves tightly clamping fabric between boards to control dye penetration and create intricate patterns through pressure.

In A&S’s interpretation of Itajime dyeing, twenty boards with carved grooves serve as the basis for patterns. Fabric is sandwiched between these boards while being folded in, tightly clamped from both sides, and then immersed in an indigo dye solution to bring out the desired motifs.  This Itajime dyeing technique, developed through trial and error by an indigo dyeing workshop that inherited disused boards originally intended for Murayama Oshima Tsumugi, represents an original innovation. It involves two distinct stages, both entrusted entirely to the artisan’s tactile sensibility." - A&S

About Arts & Science

Arts & Science was founded by Sonya Park in 2003 with the designer's goal of opening a small shop selling only the things she truly loved.  Originally she brought in antique pieces of furniture and clothing sourced from Europe.  She was inspired by many vintage clothing pieces and began her clothing line based around some of these simple and classic hard-to-find pieces.  Arts & Science currently has multiple shops throughout Japan, each with a slightly different focus from clothing to food to hand-crafted wears.
